What do I need? |
6 contact hours of pharmacology continuing education pertinent
to your area of practice, as part of the total 24 contact hours
for RN renewal. |
|
|
CRNA - Pharmacology |
|
|
CRNP & CNM - Specific to prescriptive practice in the your
approved area of collaborative practice. Example: Pediatric NP,
Women’s Health NP, Acute Care NP, etc. |
|
How soon do I
need it? |
Pharmacology CE contact hours must be earned between January 1,
2009 and December 31, 2010, and reported with RN-APN renewal by
December 31, 2010.
This is the same earning period for RN license renewal. |
|
How can I tell
if the course is acceptable to the Alabama of Nursing? |
Program title clearly identifies topic in pharmacology.
OR
Certificate of participation specifies pharmacology contact
hours as a portion of a larger program. |
|
What about
courses offered by my specialty organization? |
The Board of Nursing recognizes continuing education that has
been approved by national specialty organizations, but the

|
When do I
report my pharmacology CE to ABN? |
Record your CE credits at your convenience on your Individual CE
Record under On-Line Services. The data table will calculate
accumulated Pharmacology CE credits in addition to credits for
RN license renewal. RN renewal will be on-line, September 1,
2010 through December 31, 2010.
Your CE hours can be entered online
here. |
|
|
Retain documentation of all contact
hours for 4 years from date that you participated in the
program. |
|
But what if…? |
|
|
Program title
doesn’t specify pharmacology content. |
Request the provider to verify pharmacology content hours before
you register for the course. Some, but not all, providers will
issue an amended certificate, and may charge a fee for this
individual service. |
|
Content is not
obviously related to my specialty practice but there is a
connection. |
The ABN staff reviews contact hours that are reported on the
renewal application. Validation of questionable content will
cause a delay in processing your renewal. The contact hours may
ultimately be rejected. |
|
Can I count the
graduate courses in my APN education program?
|
Pharmacology CE contact hours for APN renewal must be
earned after completion of the academic graduate
curriculum. If the course was required for your graduate
degree prior to APN approval or to take the APN certification
exam, you cannot count it again for continuing education toward
APN renewal.
Academic graduate nursing courses may be submitted for RN
continuing education requirements. |
|
I just received APN approval. Do I have to report
Pharmacology CE on APN renewal? |
If the APN receives initial approval on or after July 1, 2010,
pharmacology CE credits are not required for APN renewal in
2010.
Note: status of APN approval does not change the CE
requirement for RN license renewal. |
|
I just received APN approval. Do I have to renew the APN
status with RN renewal? |
Check the expiration date on your APN approval card or check
License Look up on the ABN website.

December 31, 2010. The APN will lapse on January 1, 2011, if not
