PCTS in Dialysis

Can Patient Care Technicians cannulate dialysis fistulas?

Patient care technicians are unlicensed personnel regardless of the location of care being provided.  Nurses are prohibited by rule to delegate invasive or sterile procedures to unlicensed persons as reflected in the rule below.

Administrative Code Rule 610-X-6-.03(2e) and 610-X-6-.04(2e) state that

“Delegation of selected nursing functions to others in accordance with the education and demonstrated competence of the persons.  Tasks delegated to unlicensed assistive personnel shall not require the exercise of independent nursing judgment or intervention.  Selected nursing functions that may not be delegated include but are not limited to performance of invasive or sterile procedures or administration of medications except as provided in Rule 610-X-6-.06, -.07.” 

(Rule 610-X-6-.06 refers to School Nurses and Rule 610-X-6-.07 refers to the State of Alabama Independent Living Program)
