Procedures Not Approved

for
Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNP)
& Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM)

The Joint Committee of Advanced Practice Nursing of the Alabama Board of Nursing and the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners reviews applications for collaborative practice and requests for procedures, and submits recommendation for approval or denial to the Board of Nursing and the Board of Medical Examiners.  The committee includes six members:  one CRNP and one CNM in collaborative practice, one Board of Nursing representative, three physicians including at least one physician in collaborative practice. 

The Standard Protocols for CRNP and CNM are included in the Application for Approval of Advanced Practice Nursing.  The forms can be downloaded from the Applications page of the ABN website, www.abn.state.al.us

The following procedures are not authorized for the practice of Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives.  Disallowed procedures are reviewed annually. 

Administration of peripheral block anesthetics
Botox®, Collagen and Restylane injection; Mesotherapy

Central line insertion at subclavian and femoral sites. 

Central venous line insertion at jugular site is permissible and requires application with protocol, review by the Joint Committee and approval by Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners prior to performing.  Contact the Board of Nursing for parameters.

Complex suturing
Cryotherapy/Cyrosurgery

Cryotherapy of superficial benign skin lesions is permissible and requires application with protocol, review by the Joint Committee and approval by Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners prior to performing.

Nasal endoscopy
Needle aspiration of breast mass
Paracentesis
Percutaneous liver biopsy

Shave/cautery of superficial lesions without biopsy.

Shave biopsy is permissible and requires application with protocol, review by the Joint Committee and approval by Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners prior to performing.

Sphenopalatine ganglion block with topical agent
Thoracentesis
Vacuum – assisted vaginal delivery
