This a reminder that the renewal period ends at 4:30 pm on December 31 for LPNs, RNs holding multistate licenses, MACs, and advanced practice nurses holding multistate licenses issued by other Nurse Licensure Compact states (MSPs).  As you know, if you fail to renew by December 31, you will not be legally authorized to practice nursing in the state of Alabama.

Additionally, a large number of licensees remain ineligible to renew, because they have not satisfied the Board’s continuing education (CE) requirements (24 hours CE per renewal period for in-state nurses; 6 hours of Pharmacology CE for advanced practice nurses).  You should be aware that the ABN offers dozens of hours of Board-developed online CE free of charge (CE course catalog).  Please be sure to visit www.abn.alabama.gov ASAP, to give yourself plenty of time to complete adequate CE prior to attempting to renew.

For those of you holding multistate licenses, please be advised that, if you fail to renew by December 31, you will be required to reinstate your license.  Reinstatement of a multistate license requires submission of a new fingerprint background check.  This will inevitably lead to delays in processing reinstatement and could cause you to miss several weeks of work.  You can avoid the new fingerprint background check by renewing on time.

Again, it is vital that you renew by December 31, to preserve your license and your livelihood.  Please feel free to direct any questions to licensing@abn.alabama.gov.
