NOTES FOR EXAM APPLICANTS

  • Please note that each applicant should apply for licensure by examination in only one state. We also have received reports indicating that some applicants are applying for and receiving Temporary Permits in multiple jurisdictions. This is not allowed.

REQUIREMENTINFORMATION
ELECTRONIC APPLICATIONYou must submit a complete application which includes the PSOR form and Citizenship Checklist and documentation below as well as completion of the fingerprinting process after application submission.  For information about what is required on the application, see the Licensure by Exam FAQs.

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN)You must have a valid Social Security Number. You will not be able to complete the application without submitting your SSN.
CITIZENSHIP/LEGAL PRESENCE:
You must be a citizen or legal US resident
For information on meeting this requirement, please refer to the Citizenship/Legal Presence FAQs. You must complete and submit the appropriate form (see button at right) and supporting documentation to the Board.
PRIMARY STATE OF RESIDENCE (PSOR):To qualify for multistate licensure in this state, you must declare Alabama as your primary state of residency and provide documentation of your residency in Alabama (ABN Administrative Code 610-X-4) and complete the appropriate Declaration of Primary (Home) State of Residence form (see button at left) and supporting documentation. If your primary state of residence is not Alabama, you cannot apply for a multistate license in Alabama.
FINGERPRINTING:You must have an application on file with the Board of Nursing prior to submitting for fingerprinting. If you submit fingerprints prior to completing the application, no refund will be issued. Click the button to the right for fingerprinting instructions.
NURSING PROGRAM GRADUATIONYou must have graduated from a nursing program (RN or PN) that substantially meets the same educational criteria as Alabama nursing programs.
NURSING PROGRAM TRANSCRIPTYou must request your nursing program to submit an official transcript to the ABN in a sealed envelope. Faxed transcripts are not accepted.

The Board accepts transcripts through eScrip-Safe, Parchment, National Student Clearinghouse, and Credential Solutions.  Transcripts from these agencies can be sent to transcripts@abn.alabama.gov.

REGISTER WITH PEARSON VUEAlthough Pearson Vue will allow registration for the NCLEX® without your submitting a middle name or Social Security Number (SSN), the ABN requires you to submit this information to Pearson Vue to ensure accurate processing (see button at right). The name on the ID you will use for testing must match your ABN and Pearson Vue registration.
